The Daily Rambling Artist: Guey - When Laughter Trumps Empathy!
I went to see a friend of mine while he was at work early one morning. He looked spooked when I walked in. I asked him what was wrong and he says, 'Guey, I had this dream. My uncle who is deceased was in it and he told me I was going to die.' I understood why he was spooked, and I felt bad for not being more sympathetic, but I was fixated by that word, 'guey.'
I walked back over to my studio and painted today’s featured piece, celebrating the word 'guey.' My parents are from Central America, so 'guey' is not a part of our lingo. It comes from Mexico. In case you're wondering, the dictionary.com tells us that guey means: Güey, pronounced 'whey,' is Mexican slang for 'dumbass' or 'idiot,' although it can also be used more as a slang term for 'man' or 'dude.' It's a funny word.
Revisiting the painting as I write this makes me think I need to make more of these tributes. What do you think?
