The Daily Rambling Artist: The Natural Illusion - Unveiling the Power of Environment

"Nobody's a natural. You work hard to get good and then work to get better. It's hard to stay on top.” -Carlton Fisk

Athlete portraits hold a special place in my heart, and I've recently started adding meaningful quotes to these artworks. Carlton Fisk's words resonate deeply with me. I couldn't agree more with his perspective.

Over the years, I've been told I had a natural talent for various things. Upon reflection, however, I realized that what appeared as innate talent was, in fact, a result of my environment and upbringing. For me, it was the gift of storytelling, and I owe it all to my mother.

My "natural" voice as a storyteller didn't come from genetics or divine intervention. It was nurtured by listening intently to my mother's stories as I grew up, especially during my years as an only child until the age of nine. Her voice was a constant presence, and I soaked in every word, every cadence, and every detail of her captivating narratives.

I often asked her to retell stories, not because I had forgotten them, but because I wanted to understand the subtleties, the sequence, and the essence of her tales. That's where my "natural" storytelling ability originated—from a loving and vibrant environment, not from some inherent talent.

The truth is, if I hadn't taken it upon myself to nurture, strengthen, and develop that voice, it wouldn't have blossomed as it did. I might not have had an art career at all. Many aspects of my life follow a similar pattern. Like Fisk wisely points out, persistence is key. Skills, whether storytelling or painting, require continuous sharpening; otherwise, they fade into obscurity.

In the end, Fisk's words remind me that while talent may have its roots in the environment, it's the commitment to improvement and persistent effort that truly define those abilities. It's the hard work, the dedication, and the ongoing pursuit of excellence that allow a person to soar to new heights and remain at the top of their game.
